eautiful wherever it alights--at table settings amid flowers, her desk top, vanity, guest bedroom... This is a lovely highly detailed vintage but new in red box design by Peter Yenawine for Steuben.
This beautiful sculpture has the superb styling that was a hallmark of Steuben. The mouth blown, hand cut, beveled and polished gossamer crystal wings are permanently set in a cast body of solid marked 18k gold (approx. 27 grams weight)* and stamped with the Steuben "S" mark. The crystal is signed "Steuben" in script.
This measures approx. 4" tall by 3" long with beautiful
clarity and refraction of light into it's rainbow spectrum.
There is no damage or scratches to the detailed crystal wings, the gold is bright and shiny and the vintage red leather box is in very fine condition. Notice that the Crystal form fills it's fitted red box (pic. 4) and there is almost no space between the front of the wings and the gold antennae.
The price is very fair for a superb rare Steuben "red box" masterwork with solid 18k gold adornment.

Steuben Glass was the premier American glass company founded by Frederick Carder in 1903. It ranked as the world's foremost artisan glass house. Hand formed by American craftsmen at the works in Corning NY, it was frequently the United States' gift of State to foreign dignitaries. Steuben marketed no "seconds," items that did not meet their exacting standards were destroyed by being smashed in a bin. Steuben, a recognized luxury brand and the ultimate in art glass.

*the weight is taken from information on a highly damaged butterfly that sold on eBay, where the gold was separated from the glass--which should not happen. This design leaves the factory as one piece, the gold is not a "separate" stand--unfortunately sometimes folks try to rip off the solid gold from Steuben designs to sell as scrap. Many pieces were ruined during and after the 2008 recession and now, again during these hard times too. This means even fewer of these rare designs.
